I love capturing newborn family photos that go beyond perfectly posed moments. As an Abbotsford photographer who leans into a lifestyle and documentary approach, I love documenting the natural rhythm of a family welcoming a new baby, especially when siblings are involved!
This cozy in home newborn session was filled with quiet snuggles, bursts of toddler energy, and the kind of connection you can’t fake. Keep reading to see why lifestyle newborn family photos are a favourite of mine, how we made space for big brother to shine, and why light colours made all the difference in this dreamy indoor setting.
Unlike traditional studio sessions, lifestyle newborn family photos are all about keeping things relaxed and real. There’s no pressure for perfect poses or “say cheese” moments. Instead, we focus on genuine connection. Things like those tiny baby stretches, cuddles on the couch, and the little ways your family interacts in your own space.
As an Abbotsford photographer, I’ve found that this documentary style helps families feel more at ease. You’re not rushing out the door or trying to keep everything “picture perfect.” Instead, you get to enjoy your home, your pace, and your people. This creates imagery that is full of genuine emotion!
One of my favourite parts of this session? Watching just how much the older siblings absolutely love their new baby brother. Toddlers can be unpredictable (and let’s be honest, hilariously honest), which is exactly what makes their presence in newborn family photos so magical! Whether they’re giving kisses, running circles around the couch, or just peeking into the bassinet with curiosity, it’s all part of your family’s story.
During sessions like this, I gently guide siblings into the frame in a way that feels natural and fun. In this particular session, near the end when everyone was feeling done, the great idea was thrown out there to have big brother read his favourite story to his little sister and baby brother. Those moments ended up being just so precious!
If you’re worried about how your toddler will “cooperate” during a session, don’t be! With a lifestyle approach, there’s room for snacks, breaks, and lots of movement. The best moments often come when no one’s trying too hard.
If you’re planning your own newborn family photos in Abbotsford, one simple tip can elevate your session right away. I always encourage my clients to wear light coloured clothing. Think whites, creams, soft greys, and pastels. These tones help reflect natural light, which is especially helpful indoors, and they create a clean, timeless look without distracting from what really matters, the fam!
This family chose such a classic look! White tees/tops and jeans. This worked beautifully with the natural light in their home. The result? Airy, glowy images that feel warm, intimate, and cohesive. Light colours also pair well with nearly every décor style, which keeps your gallery feeling elegant and versatile. So even if you think “well my house isn’t white so my photos won’t look like this”, I promise that going with light coloured clothing will automatically up that airy light feeling in your final photos.
Need help choosing outfits? I always help with style guidance before your session and have a few go to pieces in my client closet if you’re feeling stuck!
From a sweet yawn captured in the quiet of the nursery to the playfulness of everyone piling on the bed, this session had it all! One moment that especially stood out was big brother proudly reading the families favourite book, “Brown Bear Brown Bear” to his two younger siblings. I’ll never get bored of freezing these in between memories for families to look back on as their babies grow.
If you’re dreaming of newborn family photos that feel natural, meaningful, and joyfully unposed, I’d love to connect. As a lifestyle Abbotsford photographer, I specialize in capturing the real stuff and genuine moments of emotion.
