One of the best parts of newborn photography with siblings is capturing those first interactions. At ages where attention spans are short and energy runs high, I always go into these sessions with a very laid back and easy going approach.

In this session, we let the older kids move freely, talk to their baby sister, hold her hands, or simply lie close and admire her, just like the moment on the bed when all three kids snuggled up together! It was so precious being able to witness just how much they love and adore this sweet baby girl.

Why In Home Sessions Work For Young Children

Photoshoots can be a lot for little ones. There can be unfamiliar spaces, pressure to smile, and lots of waiting! That’s why I love doing newborn photography with siblings in the comfort of your own home, where things like extra clothes, snacks and comfy places to sit are easily available.

There’s no need to pack a bag or rush out the door. Everyone is more relaxed, and the photos reflect that. We play, cuddle, read books, or just hang out in the living room or on the bed. It is truly whatever feels natural for your family!

The goal for in home photos is never to get “perfect poses”. It’s about preserving the feeling of what life looks like right now, whatever that looks like for your family.

This family embraced it all! The full group cuddles on the bed, the quiet moments of mom rocking baby while the older kids peeked in, and the spontaneous smiles that come from simply being together and loving on baby sister.

Planning Newborn Photography With Siblings

If you’re expecting a new baby and already have little ones at home, here are a few tips for making the most of your session:

• Don’t stress about perfection. Toddlers will do toddler things, and that’s okay! (It is in fact encouraged, because those are always the cutest moments!)
• Keep snacks, books, and comfort items nearby. Familiar items help kids feel at ease.
• Let them be involved. Ask them to “help” with baby, or talk to them about how special their new role is.
• Take breaks when needed. We follow your kids’ lead and keep things flexible. There’s always lots I can take photos of if the older kids are needing a break for a few minutes.
