Surrey beaches offer some of the most stunning backdrops for all types of photography, from maternity to family sessions. A beach session allows for natural, candid moments—kids playing in the sand, parents walking along the shoreline, and golden sunsets illuminating the scene. You could even get really creative and do a “day at the beach session”! Think everyone in their swimsuits, making sandcastles, and playing in the water. If you’re considering a maternity or family photoshoot, here are the top three Surrey beaches to capture timeless memories.
Features: This well-loved location (which I know, isn’t technically in Surrey, but it is close enough!) is home to a stunning pier, sandy shoreline, and beautiful sunsets. The shops and restaurants along the waterfront add character and charm to your photos, or are a great place to stop for a snack or ice cream after your photo session! With an expansive beach during low tide, there’s plenty of space for kids to explore and play.
Best Time to Visit: Golden hour provides soft, warm lighting and a dreamy glow.
Parking & Accessibility: Paid parking is available along Marine Drive, and the beach is easily accessible for families with strollers.
Features: This quiet, nature-filled location offers stunning ocean views, grassy areas, and sandy shoreline. The driftwood and pathways add variety to your session.
Best Time to Visit: I actually love this location for sunrise sessions! The sun rises right along the tip of the spit so it is a perfect spot for families with early risers! (And then you don’t have to deal with a late bedtime if you have little ones)
Considerations: It can be windy, so plan outfits accordingly!
Features: A hidden gem, Mud Bay Park offers a tranquil setting with coastal wetlands, walking trails, and peaceful waterfront views. The open sky and natural surroundings create a serene atmosphere for any type of photos.
Best Time To Visit: Mud Bay Park is best for evening golden hour sessions. I typically don’t recommend this location for families, but instead often have maternity sessions here as it has a beautiful and romantic feel while the sun is setting.
Considerations: The shoreline is affected by tides, so timing your session accordingly is key.
The beach is probably my all time favourite spot for my sessions! The open sky and reflective water provide soft, even lighting, perfect for dreamy, golden hour photos. It also has such an open and clear background if you want your photos to have a timeless feel to them. The relaxed environment is perfect for capturing candid moments. Kids can run around and play in the sand or dip their toes in the water, parents can sit along the beach while their kids play, and kicking your shoes off creates a relaxed session feel that will come through in the final photos. These Surrey beaches offer an incredible mix of textures and scenery, from sandy shores to driftwood and grassy dunes. It gives a great variety of photos in your final gallery.
Pros:
– Beautiful scenery with dynamic backdrops.
– A relaxed environment where kids can run and play.
– Stunning sunsets and sunrises add warmth and depth to photos.
Cons:
– Weather dependent—wind and rain can impact sessions.
– Tides can change beach accessibility.
– Crowds may be a factor, especially at popular locations and on the weekends.
